Joshua Tanner

Joshua writes the "New Age Investor" column on Student Savvy.

Bio:
Josh is a junior at Binghamton University, State University of New York, where he is majoring in accounting and finance. Joshua has been interested in finance his entire life, opening his first bank account at age 4 and investing in stocks starting in 7th grade.

Where are you originally from and where do you live now?
I have lived in New York State my whole life and am currently living in Binghamton, NY.

Have a personal quote?
"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Pick one word to describe yourself and tell why it describes you so well.
Studious, I do my homework for everything. Since I’m a college student this is particularly important.

What do you like most about Student Savvy? (be honest)
I think it’s exciting that there’s a website that not only gives you advice, but the advice is from people your age who have been there.

Keeping your car moving: Find a new place for auto repair

America's job hotspots: The best places to find a new job

Skype: The cell phone replacement?

What is the best advice you've ever received?
Measure twice, Cut once - an old carpenter’s adage. Be smart about your investments. Even at a young age, I’ve had stocks that I’ve earned 70% on and I’ve had investments that I’ve lost about 55% of the value.

What is your best money saving secret/technique? (c'mon, everyone has at least one)
Even if you are afraid of the stock market, bank accounts are offering higher interest rates than ever. Check them out at www.bankrate.com. I use HSBC Direct and make 5.05% APY, better than traditional banks at .5%.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I’m an accounting major, so hopefully either owning my own practice or being a senior manager with a firm.

You have 2 hours to kill. What are you going to do?
Well, I really shouldn’t have time to kill. I am overloading at school and am holding down a few jobs. This, of course, does not actually prevent me from having two hours free, so usually I will go to the library and mess around online. I enjoy playing online billiards, at which I'm decent.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
I really enjoy Boston. I know it seems silly to want to go somewhere so close, but I could definitely have a great time vacationing in that city.

Which celebrity or public figure do you most resemble?
Have you ever heard of Josh Peck? He’s on a lot of Nickelodeon shows. I’m told I am a dead-on look alike of him.

Name one thing you wish you could do/have.
I’m applying for accounting internships this year. I’m hoping that one of them ends up working out for me!

What is your favorite sport and favorite team?
That’s easy, Baseball and the NY Mets.
