Kim Rojas

Kim Rojas Kim writes the "Frugal Travel" column on Student Savvy.

Where are you originally from and where do you live now?
Born and raised in the Boston area, now live in the Rocky Mountains.

Have a personal quote?
Actually, I have two. Choose the one you like. "Live well... laugh hard." (mine) and then Henry Ford said, "Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t -- you are right."

Pick one word to describe yourself and tell why it describes you so well.
Gracious -- because I never tell a person what they already know about themselves and I try to truly understand all but arrogant people.

What do you like most about Student Savvy? (be honest)
I like that the articles are short. I don’t have a marathon attention span.

What is the best advice you've ever received?
When someone asks you a question that you don’t want to answer, just say, "Why do you want to know?"

What is your best money saving secret/technique? (c'mon, everyone has at least one)
Buy generic.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Running my successful writing business with the ability to travel freely and often.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
People who chew with their mouths open.

What is your greatest accomplishment?
Obtaining my BA at the age of 45.

Keeping your car moving: Find a new place for auto repair

America's job hotspots: The best places to find a new job

Skype: The cell phone replacement?

What is your greatest athletic achievement?
Scaled Cooper Mountain in Oregon on my bike.

What is your greatest fear?
Being tortured.

You have 2 hours to kill. What are you going to do?
Probably something that would stimulate my brain, like stop in a book store or if at home, work on a fiction novel.

Ever had a brush with fame? Explain.
Nope. But when I was young and in modeling school, I was on 60 Minutes briefly.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
Italy, because they really know how to live.

Name one person you'd most like to meet and why.
I’d like to meet Billy Graham. He’s a man of great wisdom who though in the spotlight for years, never had a scandal. He stayed married to the same woman and he knew how to balance life with fame.

Which celebrity or public figure do you most resemble?
Visually? I have no idea.

You're stuck on a deserted island. What is one possession you couldn't live without?
Music.

Ever do something wrong or out of the ordinary? Make a confession and be honest.
I am a firm believer in the fact that so many of us have done actions worthy of jail time... we just never got caught.

Did you ever do something as a child that you look back on now and say, 'Wow, I'm lucky to even be alive after that!'?
So many times, yes. And also as an adult!

Name one thing you wish you could do/have.
I wish I could publish a series of encyclopedias for kids.

What's the best product you use that most people don't know about?
Night treatment, cotton gloves and Vaseline. Sounds weird I know, but mountain people who don’t use it have hands like sandpaper.

If you could go back in time and witness one event in history, what would you go back and see?
The parting of the Red Sea.

What's the strangest thing you've ever seen?
A man on the street in Costa Rica with one leg. On the other half leg he had a tree limb with leather straps nailed to it.

How do you define success?
Loving what I do everyday for work.

What is your favorite sport and favorite team?
I like international soccer a lot. ¡Saprisa! (team)

What is your favorite movie ever and why?
National Treasure, because it has love, intrigue, humor, action and a good ending.

What is your best investment to date? (doesn't have to be finance-related)
I think reading to my children every night of their lives was the greatest investment I ever made.
