Eric Richardson

Eric Richardson Eric writes the "Couch Potato Review" column on Student Savvy.

Bio:

Eric is 22 years of age and just graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.A. in Film Studies. He is living in College Park for one more year in an effort to postpone real life and desperately cling to the wonderful existence of college life.

In his time at Maryland, Eric had a video game column for the student newspaper and wrote other miscellaneous pieces for the entertainment section. He’s a connoisseur of film, TV, and video games, meaning he spends entirely too much time in front of a screen. Eric is currently working as a freelance writer for several web sites writing entertainment and sports articles. In his free time Eric watches sports, plays video games, and watches tons of movies -- but then again that’s what he does for work. Eric could say that he’s a career-driven workaholic, but he’s really just too lazy to get off the couch.

Where are you originally from and where do you live now?
I'm originally from the thriving metropolis of Walkersville, Maryland, where cows outnumber people and where the town is currently celebrating the addition of its third traffic light. I'm living in D.C. right now.

Have a personal quote?
"There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot." - Steven Wright

Pick one word to describe yourself and tell why it describes you so well.
Expressive. If I'm not writing, then I'm painting or editing movie clips or playing around with photoshop all as a creative and expressive outlet. Of course all of these things happen only if I'm not expressing myself by laying on the couch playing video games.

What do you like most about Student Savvy? (be honest)
I like the fact that it is geared towards people my age because we need financial advice more than any other age group.

What is the best advice you've ever received?
If you come across a bear in the woods, play dead, then it won't maul you.

What is your best money saving secret/technique? (c'mon, everyone has at least one)
Cooking for yourself. You would be surprised how much money you spend going out to eat and on fast food. Free meals can't be underestimated either. Visiting home is a sure way to get one, but you could also roam a grocery store that gives out free samples for a while.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In a mirror, or a reflection in a lake.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
The phrase pet peeve. It drives me nuts.

What is your greatest accomplishment?
My friend and I beat Halo 2 in one sitting the day it came out. Thirteen straight hours of alien blasting goodness.

What is your greatest athletic achievement?
I scored five goals in a soccer game in a 14 and under league game. I really haven't done anything remotely athletic aside from running since high school.

What is your greatest fear?
Bears

You have 2 hours to kill. What are you going to do?
Watch a movie, play video games or work out. I could easily play video games for 2 hours straight, but a two hour work out would be a stretch.

Ever had a brush with fame? Explain.
I saw Richard Simmons in an airport. He was wearing those little nylon work out shorts he has on in the videos. I met John Elway in a bar that same weekend.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
I would go to Japan to see some of the old castles and I would like to spend some time in Tokyo.

Name one person you'd most like to meet and why.
I would like to meet Woody Allen because he is one of the funniest people on earth and he is one of my favorite directors.

Which celebrity or public figure do you most resemble?
Some of my friends say I look a little like Russel Crowe.

You're stuck on a deserted island. What is one possession you couldn't live without?
A plane with a full fuel tank.

Ever do something wrong or out of the ordinary? Make a confession and be honest.
I worked at a video store, and when people were being jerks I would pretend that the movie they wanted wasn't in.

Did you ever do something as a child that you look back on now and say, 'Wow, I'm lucky to even be alive after that!'?
I was fishing on the Snake River and the bank collapsed. I slid down about six feet and almost into the river, which would have swept me away. Pretty close call.

Name one thing you wish you could do/have.
I wish I could play in the world series of poker without having to pay the 10,00 bucks.

What's the best product you use that most people don't know about?
I put Old Bay on everything I eat. It seems like no one outside of Maryland knows what this stuff is, but I couldn't live without it.

If you could go back in time and witness one event in history, what would you go back and see?
I would want to go back and be in the room when Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb on Japan.

What's the strangest thing you've ever seen?
I saw an emu running down sidewalk in my neighborhood. It had escaped from an emu farm and was running loose around town for weeks.

How do you define success?
Being able to enjoy your work.

What is your favorite sport and favorite team?
Football and the Washington Redskins. My mood for the entire week is determined by whether the Redskins won or lost.

What is your favorite movie ever and why?
Reservoir Dogs because the entire movie takes place in two places but still manages to be exciting. Brilliant directing and the actors are great.

What is your best investment to date? (doesn't have to be finance-related)
My PS2. That machine has given my countless hours of entertainment.
