Amy Mullen

Amy Mullen Amy writes the "Common Cents" column on Student Savvy.

Where are you originally from and where do you live now?
I was born in northeastern Pennsylvania, and I now live in Corning, New York.

Have a personal quote?
"There are no impossibilities in dreams and in love" - unknown

Pick one word to describe yourself and tell why it describes you so well.
Determined. I don’t ever want to give up on something I believe in. If you work hard, good things will happen. It doesn’t matter if you are determined to have a good time, or to make the world a better place, you just have to believe in and work towards something, and you will never feel empty.

What do you like most about Student Savvy? (be honest)
I wish there had been a website to like this when I first went to school. Students aren’t always prepared, and I think it is wonderful that there is now a place they can go when they have questions.

What is the best advice you've ever received?
Follow your passion, and never stop believing in yourself. Be your own biggest fan.

What is your best money saving secret/technique? (c'mon, everyone has at least one)
I like to put pocket change away at the end of the day. It adds up fast and you never miss it.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
People who put down others to make themselves feel better.

What is your greatest accomplishment?
Putting aside my doubts and fears to start a writing career. It may not seem like much, but for me, it was huge.

What is your greatest fear?
My biggest fear is that I’ll look back on my life one day and see missed opportunities that may have changed my life for the better.

You have 2 hours to kill. What are you going to do?
Read a book, answer emails, listen to a CD, or even take a nap. I’ve forgotten what it’s like to have two free hours!

Ever had a brush with fame? Explain.
My daughter and I are in a Wiggle’s DVD. No big deal really, we are just in the front row of the audience. However, while at a Wiggle’s concert, a woman recognized me from the DVD. I’m still not sure what to do with that. It was very disconcerting!

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
Australia! I am fascinated with Australia, and have a few good friends there I can’t wait to meet. I’m just afraid I will go there and will never want to come back!

Name one thing you wish you could do/have.
Write a biography about my favorite singer. Though he may argue with me, I think he has led a very notable and interesting life. He has an amazing story to tell.

How do you define success?
To me, success is happiness. It doesn’t matter who you are, who you know, or how much money you have in the bank. If you are truly happy, you’ve won!
