Chelsea writes the "Loose Change" column on Student Savvy.
Bio:
Chelsea is an insomniac from Seattle. Currently a senior at UCLA, she is majoring in Political Science with a minor in Education. Chelsea is an avid football fan and owner of two pythons. In the last three years she's lived in nine apartments and had three different credit cards, so she knows the ins and outs of many different financial situations. Chelsea knows what it is like to juggle tuition and rent costs, while still trying to afford makeup and clothes or saving up for a trip to Europe.
Where are you originally from and where do you live now?
As a child I lived in Maui and then moved to Seattle. When I was sixteen I moved to Thousand Oaks, California. I now live in Los Angeles and absolutely love it here. I hate rain and hope to live in the sun for the rest of my life.
Have a personal quote?
"He who walks in another's tracks leaves no footprints." - Joan L. Brannon
Pick one word to describe yourself and tell why it describes you so well.
Impulsive. I make snap decisions constantly and change my mind in the blink of an eye. People get very frustrated with me because of it, but I've learned that it can also be very beneficial to be the one person who can quickly make decisions while others hesitate. At the same time, however, I've worked hard to train myself to pause and take a moment to think things through before reacting instinctually to every situation.
What do you like most about Student Savvy? (be honest)
As a student, I like the fact that at Student Savvy I can find advice from people like me who are going through similar issues. I sometimes feel inferior going to parents, teachers, and other advisors for answers to questions, but at Student Savvy I can find realistic solutions from people who have recently experienced similar situations.
What is the best advice you've ever received?
My grandma has always told me, "Don't let the bad in this world keep you from seeing the good." I know it's corny but it works for me.
What is your best money saving secret/technique? (c'mon, everyone has at least one)
If I see something I really want, I never buy it immediately. I mull it over for about a day and if, after thinking about it, I still think that it is worth the money, I'll go back and get it.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Probably in a hospital with lung cancer from all the smog in LA.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
People in airports who feel compelled to wander from side-to-side instead of walk in a straight line. And when large groups of people form a long row and block everyone else. I wish people would just learn to walk!!
What is your greatest accomplishment?
Getting into UCLA. It's been my goal since I was really young.
What is your greatest athletic achievement?
Spiders. I realize it's not rational, but they absolutely terrify me.
You have 2 hours to kill. What are you going to do?
Build sandcastles at the beach.
Ever had a brush with fame? Explain.
I won my school's spelling bee in 5th grade and was on the local news. It was the highlight of my life.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
Germany.
Name one person you'd most like to meet and why.
The Grim Reaper. I hate my life. Or anyone who can compete with my sarcasm.
Which celebrity or public figure do you most resemble?
I've been told that I look like Marisa Tomei from "Anger Management" and "What Women Want."
What's the best product you use that most people don't know about?
Roux Fanci-full Color Refreshing Rinse. I have blonde highlights in my dark brown hair, and this product helps to keep my highlights less brassy so that I don't have to go to the salon as often. I get it at Rite-Aid for less than $10.
What's the strangest thing you've ever seen?
When I was in Hong Kong, I saw a vendor who kept dead mice in jars with some sort of alcohol solution. She said that the dead mouse-extract was very good for the skin. People were lining up to buy this stuff.
How do you define success?
Success is individual for every person. It is achieving the goals that you set for yourself.
What is your favorite sport and favorite team?
UCLA Football.
What is your favorite movie ever and why?
Saved. It reminds me of my own struggles throughout high school, and it's really upbeat and funny.
What is your best investment to date? (doesn't have to be finance-related)
My digital camera. I spent way more on it than I should have, but I love taking pictures and I'm glad that I splurged. Once in a while we need to spend "irrationally" when it comes to things that are truly important to us.
